Moving to Holland with Pets

When you are moving you want to keep your most precious possessions close to you. Moving with your pet to Holland doesn’t have to be difficult. Coming in by plane? In some cases, your pet can come as baggage, but in most cases, your pet will be placed in cargo. The animals go into special cargo compartments that are heated and kept under normal air pressure.

When you are moving to Holland with your pet there are just some rules you need to follow. For example dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies. What rules apply to you depends on the type of animal you are bringing to The Netherlands and from which country you are coming from.

The rules you need to follow when moving to Holland with pets

  • Minimum age: the animal must be at least 15 weeks old;
  • compulsory vaccination for rabies: at the age of 12 weeks;
  • After vaccination you must wait 21 days before bringing the animal in the Netherlands;
  • chip and pet passport are required.

If you have any questions you can contact the NVWA here: 0900 / 03 88

If you are travelling with more than 5 animals you need to have a paper that these animals are moving with you and are not for sale. Animal trafficking is a serious deal and they want to make sure these are your lovely pets.

Dogs to Holland

Moving your dog to Holland? Make sure to register and chip your dog(s) 2 weeks after arrival. You can do this at your local veterinarian. If the dog gets lost they can find it and bring it back to your (new) address in The Netherlands. If you intend to bring your pet back to the UK you must ensure the rabies vaccinations are kept up to date.

Moving to Holland with another animal

If you are moving to Holland with a rabbit, small rodent, bird, fish, amphibian or reptile then you need a health certificate from a veterinarian.

If you have unusual pets refer to , Environmental Protection and Wild Life Management, Bezuidenhoutseweg 73 (P.O. Box 20401), 2500 EK The Hague (phone: 31-70-3793390 for dispensation before travelling, as otherwise your pet will be refused entry even if the correct paperwork is offered.
