Is Romania Environmentally Friendly?

Since the war between Russia and Ukraine started, the countries dependent on Russian gas and oil have been searching for alternatives to a more independent scenario of sustainable and self-sufficient energy. The EU has banned the imports of petroleum products and crude oil. This and many other sanctions have led EU countries to align for a resolution. Romania and three different EU countries are on the run for a more sustainable and accessible alternative to distribute energy to the population.

A North For European Families That Rely On Russian Oil And Gas

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine caused many EU sanctions on Russia. The central EU has imposed a near-total ban on Russian oil imports, including seaborne crude and refined products, cutting off about 90% of Russian oil exports to the EU. Additionally, it implemented a price cap on Russian crude to limit Moscow’s revenue while ensuring global energy supply stability. However, the measures weren’t enough to secure affordable prices, increasing the costs for individuals and families.

Romania, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Hungary have been aiming to create the “Caspian Sea-European Union Green Energy Corridor.” The plan is to generate renewable energy in Azerbaijan and export it to Europe via an undersea cable across the Black Sea. This initiative, supported by the EU, aims to boost energy security, reduce reliance on Russian imports, and promote sustainable power despite challenges like regional instability.

The initiative will improve energy security for Azerbaijan, Georgia, Hungary, Romania, and the EU by diversifying renewable energy sources and reducing reliance on Russian imports. It will create economic growth through job creation and infrastructure development, strengthen regional cooperation, lower population energy costs, and advance sustainable energy goals. Despite challenges like regional instability, it’s a strategic step toward a more resilient, independent and greener energy system for Europe.

Why is Romania important for the EU?

Romania is an integral part of the EU for many reasons, and if you’re considering moving there, it’s worth knowing its importance. Its location in southeastern Europe makes it a gateway between Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans, and its Black Sea coast is a provider of energy, with the port of Constanta being a significant asset. Romania is also one of the few EU countries with natural gas reserves, helping reduce reliance on Russian energy. The economy is growing steadily, offering opportunities in agriculture, technology, and IT sectors. At the same time, its borders with non-EU countries like Ukraine and Moldova make it essential for security and migration management. Romania is culturally rich, with traditions that add to the EU’s and European defence. Romania might be a great choice if you’re looking for a place with economic growth, a mix of history and modernity, and a strategic location.

Environment Culture in Romanian Society

Romania currently has an increasing culture of awareness regarding climate change and sustainability. Most Romanians consider climate change a significant challenge and support renewable energy and sustainable practices. The government incentives and practices support has introduced a 2024–2030 Climate Change Adaptation Strategy to address risks like extreme weather and promote biodiversity conservation. While public concern is high, scepticism about meeting international climate targets reflects hope and challenges ahead.

6 Ways of Being an Environmentally Friendly Expat in Romania

For individuals and families moving to Romania, knowing how to introduce themselves in this new reality is a way to fit in and actively participate in society. To approach yourself as an advocate for environmentally friendly practices can be a great way to show your commitment to being a positive part of the local community.  Here are some steps to embrace this lifestyle:

  1. Adopt Local Sustainability Practices: Familiarise yourself with Romania’s emphasis on reducing waste, recycling, and using public transport. Many cities are improving their green initiatives, so participate in these efforts.
  2. Support Local and Sustainable Products: Visit local markets that promote organic and seasonal produce. This will support small-scale farmers and reduce their environmental footprint.

  4. Reduce Energy Consumption: Romania is increasingly focused on energy efficiency. Use energy-saving appliances and opt for renewable energy options when available.
  5. Learn and Share Ideas: Educate yourself on Romania’s green policies and share ideas on sustainability with neighbours. Collaborating can help you integrate while contributing to the community’s eco-friendly goals.
  6. Travel Responsibly: Romania’s stunning natural landscapes are perfect for eco-tourism. Respect the environment by sticking to marked trails, avoiding littering, and supporting conservation initiatives.
