Embarking on the journey of moving abroad can be exhilarating yet daunting, especially when it comes to the right destination. Spain, with its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm climate, has become a top choice for expatriates from around the globe. This comprehensive guide will explore the best place for expats to live in Spain, focusing on an enjoyable transition as much as the present bureaucratic processes and language barriers allow us.
Where there is sun there is life. Suppose you are the kind of person who cherishes blue skies and the pleasure of being greeted with a beautiful and shiny morning for most of the year. In that case, Spain is here for you. As if this wasn’t enough, add that to the enticing mix of traditional values and modern living, making it an ideal destination for those looking to immerse themselves in a new culture while enjoying a high quality of life. From the sun-drenched beaches of the Costa del Sol to the historic streets of Barcelona and Madrid, Spain boasts a diverse landscape that caters to all preferences. But where is the best place for expats to live in Spain? Let’s dive in and find out.
British expats often think seeking a more urbanised area is the way to go. However, the transition might be more agitated if you dare add a hint of challenge to living in Campo or a bit away from the city! You might find the perspective you didn’t know you needed. Being away from the urbanisations where British people congregate brings the opportunity to be around locals and immerse into the language and community culture. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more easygoing approach, you can find pubs, golf societies, and English-speaking clubs dedicated to the British community. Knowing that this can limit your contact with such a rich culture as Spanish delivers, perhaps we can encourage you to try the first option.
Also, there’s always a place for blending. Areas like the Costa Blanca and the Balearic Islands are home to stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife and host large populations of British residents. These regions offer a seamless blend of familiarity for Brits, adding the plus of Spanish culture and making them some of the best places for immigrants from the UK to live in Spain.
When moving with family, education, safety, and community become paramount. Cities like Valencia and Seville are often cited as the best places to live with family in Spain. These cities offer a relaxed lifestyle, affordable living costs, and excellent international schools. Moreover, their rich history and culture provide a unique backdrop for family adventures and learning experiences.
Considering that determining the best place to live in Spain depends on your preferences and lifestyle needs, we pick Madrid and Barcelona because they consistently rank high among expats for their dynamic environments, employment opportunities, and cultural offerings. These cities are perfect for those seeking an active social life and career growth. They are the best places to live in Spain for expats looking for an urban experience.
Young adults and students often seek locations with a lively social scene, educational opportunities, and affordable living. Granada, Salamanca, and Valencia are known for their bustling student populations and vibrant nightlife. With their affordability, culture, and entertainment mix, these cities are among the best places for young adults to live in Spain.
Getting the lead from the words above, we’d like to share the story of our client who moved from Brighton to Granada.
“Last fall, I went to the University of Granada, full of expectations and fears. I know expectations can often disappoint us, and fears are almost always irrational, but a human being is supposed to have feelings, and I was having a discharge of them all over me. Even though the overwhelming atmosphere made me want to step back, I followed through with my ambitions.
Granada is a university city with an immense number of students from abroad. As my main goal was to improve my Spanish to an advanced level, I was afraid to resort to English speakers to find an easier way to communicate. A friend suggested I look into “barrios” away from the centre, and she even gave me two options: La Chana and Zaidín, both neighbourhoods she had stayed in before.
While I was duelling between staying with a host family, getting a dorm or renting a private space in an Airbnb, my friend called to let me know she would be in town for half of the period I planned to stay there. The timing was perfect, and we decided to share a beautiful terrace in Zaidín, as she was already familiar with the borough.
The expat community seemed indeed a lot smaller in the neighbourhood, and we had a fair amount of Spanish conversations with Granadinos, just like I’d dreamed of. Everyone looked charming and welcoming. After this experience, the only feeling l have now about Granada is the longing to finish the legal processes and move to Spain for good as soon as possible.”
Moving to Spain requires finding the best living place and understanding the local customs, language, and legal requirements. Integrating into Spanish society can be made smoother by engaging with local communities, attending language classes, and embracing the laid-back Spanish lifestyle.
So, the end has arrived, and what do you reckon? As you can see, the best place for expats to live in Spain can vary widely based on individual needs and preferences. Whether you’re drawn to the culturally rich cities of Barcelona and Madrid, the family-friendly atmosphere of Valencia, or the sunny shores of the Costa Blanca, Spain offers many choices to suit every type of expat. By carefully considering your priorities and embracing the local culture, you can make your transition to Spain a fulfilling and enjoyable adventure.
